Nah, I get it. I just felt like you needed to include at least a little explanation about that in the story. Like, maybe next time we see Ken, he can just briefly mention that "we called Aya and Yohji back at their hotel number but they'd already left, and both their mobiles were still at the Koneko, so we figured we weren't going to get ahold of them and just went ahead with the mission". Which is probably easier than explaining the Shinkansen thing.
I figured if it was an emergency, cause letting only half their team walk into a mission really isn't a great plan, Aya and Yohji might just take the Shinkansen, and then go back later. But that would involve them getting the contact first.
And, yes, Japan probably did have cell phones in 1998. I was in Hong Kong around 1998-1999, and I remember my aunt had a cell phone.
